The Concept

What Is Yacht Shared Ownership and How Does It Work?

A yacht offers 52 weeks a year – yet very few owners want to use it for all 52 weeks. This is where Yacht Shared Ownership comes in: several owners share a Lagoon, each acquiring a stake in its ownership structure.

Unlike traditional yacht charter, you are not simply purchasing individual weeks on the water. Instead, you hold an economic interest in the yacht. The size of your ownership share depends primarily on how often and how flexibly you would like to use your Lagoon.

Available time is carefully coordinated between protected owner periods, flexible use and commercial charter. This allows important dates to be secured well in advance, while flexible periods and remaining availability can be used efficiently. The goal is to bring yacht ownership and actual usage into better balance.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions about Yacht Shared Ownership

How does ownership work, how is yacht use organised and what happens with your Lagoon when you are not on board? Here you will find answers to the most important questions.

What do I actually buy with Yacht Shared Ownership?

You are not simply purchasing individual days of use or charter weeks. You acquire an interest in the ownership structure (SPV) established specifically for the yacht and therefore participate economically in the yacht.

Depending on the financing model, the SPV either owns the yacht directly or holds the corresponding economic position within the financing structure. The specific legal and economic structure is presented transparently for each yacht.

Do I have to wait until all shares in a yacht have been sold?

For Shared Ownership yachts that are already available, you do not have to wait until all remaining shares have been sold to other owners. Morii holds shares that have not yet been placed until additional owners join.

Your investment in these yachts is therefore not dependent on the sale of the remaining shares. Which yachts and shares are currently available depends on Morii's respective offering.

Does my ownership share automatically include specific weeks of use?

No. Ownership and private yacht use are deliberately kept separate within the Morii model. A share of 25 %, for example, does not automatically mean that you are entitled to 25 % of the available weeks or to a specific number of free owner weeks.

As an owner, you participate economically in the yacht. If you would like to use your Lagoon yourself, this is arranged as a separate booking through the Morii Club system. This keeps the investment and private yacht use clearly separated.

How can I use my own Lagoon?

As a Club member, you can reserve your own Lagoon through the Morii booking system. Each use is documented as a separate booking and settled against the applicable Club balance.

Many owners will naturally prefer their own yacht – for example because of the familiar crew, personal equipment or belongings kept on board. However, you are not limited to your own yacht and, subject to availability and the applicable programme rules, can also use other offerings within the Morii network.

Can I also use other yachts, residences or experiences?

Yes, subject to the applicable programme rules and availability. Club membership is independent of ownership in a particular yacht, giving you additional possibilities beyond your own Lagoon.

The Morii network can, for example, provide access to other yachts as well as residences, private aviation and other qualifying offerings. This combines the familiarity of your own Lagoon with additional flexibility throughout the Morii network.

Is my Lagoon also operated commercially for charter?

Yes. The yacht is operated as a commercial asset and can be chartered through different distribution channels. The resulting revenues form part of the economic performance of the respective yacht company.

In addition to Club bookings, external charter opportunities, availability, season, booking lead time and the alternative commercial use of a particular period are taken into account.

Why can Club prices differ from regular charter prices?

The publicly advertised charter rate of a yacht does not necessarily represent the commercial value of every individual period of availability. Season, booking lead time, remaining availability, destination, flexibility and avoided distribution costs can all influence the commercially appropriate price of a booking.

Morii therefore operates the Club as a closed distribution channel with its own pricing methodology. Any potential pricing advantage results from this Club structure and the circumstances of the individual booking – not simply from a Club member owning shares in a yacht.

Who takes care of the crew, maintenance and day-to-day operation?

Morii coordinates the professional management of the yacht. This includes, among other things, crew, technical management, maintenance planning, insurance coordination, charter management, administration, transfers and seasonal relocations.

Owners therefore do not have to organise the day-to-day operation amongst themselves. Decisions reserved for the owners under the respective ownership agreements remain unaffected.

What ongoing costs arise with Shared Ownership?

Ongoing costs depend on the individual yacht, the ownership share and the specific operating model. These may include crew, maintenance, insurance, berthing, technical management, financing and other operating expenses.

At the same time, the yacht generates income from its commercial operation. Revenues, operating expenses, financing and other economic factors are accounted for at the level of the respective yacht company. Actual performance may differ from the business plan and is not guaranteed.

Can I sell my yacht share later?

Yes. Morii can support the private resale of your interest. Any transfer is subject to the applicable contractual terms, potential transfer restrictions, the financing structure and approval of the new owner.

The current planning horizon of the Morii programme is approximately seven years, although the actual timing may vary depending on the individual yacht and market conditions. The future market value of the yacht or share is not guaranteed.

How are taxes and VAT handled?

Ownership and private yacht use are not simply treated as the same transaction for tax purposes. Private yacht use is documented and accounted for as a separate transaction. Where VAT applies, its treatment depends on the rules applicable to the respective service and jurisdiction.

The specific tax treatment can depend, among other things, on the owner's individual circumstances, the structure of the yacht company, the cruising area and the respective use. Individual tax advice is therefore recommended, particularly for international structures.
